Savannah has been on my bucket list for years, ever since I read Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil by John Berendt. There is a not-so-great film of the book – it’s fun to spot the locations, but the book wins.

You can visit the house where the antiques dealer Jim Williams lived, and where the murder of his lover took place. The beautiful Italianate mansion is now a museum offering fascinating guided tours. https://mercerhouse.com/visit
You can also take guided walking tours of the town – which expose the untruths in both the film and the book. They last a few hours and you get to see some real architectural gems and hear great stories about many of the characters in the book.
One of the locations in the book is now a restaurant. The Old Pink House is hugely popular – you definitely need to book. https://www.theoldepinkhouserestaurant.com
We arrived early thinking we’d go for a drink at the bar, but the bar was heaving and we couldn’t get served for love nor money. So we were waiting (not long) until the table was ready.
Highlights were the Shrimp with ham gravy on a Cheddar cheese grits cake
And a fried pork chop with pan gravy, mac and cheese, and collard greens.
While in Savannah I also tried a buffalo burger (very nice) plus a biscuits and gravy breakfast (also very nice, but not something I could eat too often).
I should also mention an early morning outing to the famous Bonaventure Cemetery. The elaborate gravestones and Spanish moss make for an atmospheric and thought-provoking visit.
