Charleston is characterised by its iconic antebellum mansions, harbour, the Battery promenade and the French Quarter. We drove out to Sullivan’s Island one morning to see the beaches and even swam, though we were the only ones swimming, but to us the water felt relatively temperate.

You can also take guided walking tours of the town – which expose the untruths in both the film and the book. They last a few hours and you get to see some real architectural gems and hear great stories about many of the characters in the book.
